ESL, Language, Math, Sports Lesson Or Activity

According to Wikipedia, education “encompasses both the teaching and learning of knowledge, proper conduct, and technical competency, focusing on the cultivation of skills, trades or professions, as well as mental, moral & aesthetic development”.  Education can be formal or informal.  Formal education requires a teacher and a classroom.  Formal education is carried out through an academic curriculum formulated by the teacher and approved by the school head, making sure that the lessons cover what they are supposed to cover.  Examples of formal education are Mathematics and Language classes.  In contrast, informal education happens in an external or outdoor setting.  Learning doesn’t require a classroom.  Informal education includes community work or outreach programs, internships, and field exposures.  It provides a different atmosphere with richer range of experiences.

The emphasis that society has placed on education is beyond doubts and question.  It has been coined as one of our fundamental rights.  Several movements have already advocated that education should be made available to all, regardless of one’s gender, economic status, race or religion.  Education is further stratified to primary, secondary, higher, tertiary, adult, alternative and emotional education.  Modern trends and theories in education have become the springboard for more modern techniques such as ESL or English as a Secondary Language, a special course for non-English speakers to acquire proficiency in the English language, now used as the universal medium of instruction.  Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences also opened up the minds of the educators to a wider scope of education.  Through his theory, activities for the development of other forms of intelligences such as kinetic and musical are given emphasis.  Sports activities and music classes have been promoted and included in school curriculum.  Clubs with special interests such as varsities, dance troupes, choirs, were also introduced.  Indeed, education has gone far beyond the read and write notion.
